Richard Green says that it is a Green Lane, following Offa’s Dyke for a short while, but the name is not used by locals now. Ivan Moncton disputes this.

A draft chapter for VCH says “Smallway Lane, recorded in the later 17th century, cut off the junction of the two roads from Sparkford and continued across country to Wincanton. Referred to in 1609 in a Deed initially as “the long close near the way leading to Hatfield called the Beggars Bush Close or Hungerhill Close” and in 1615 as a “close of pasture in Wheatley or Doncaster (2a.) adjoining Wheatley Common and called Moreclose or Beggar Buske Close” and this name is used a reference point in two later deeds. Wilshamstead is now commonly known as Wilstead. The earliest record is in a Release of a missing Lease for £9 dated 2 June 1655 between Francis Winton, gent., Rich. Doggett, yeoman, Thos. Doggett, cordwainer, & Ralph Doggett, tailor, to Rich. Ashwell, husbandman, all of Leighton Buzzard, of 6 acres in the Open Fields, including place-names: “Shenley Hill Field, Long Woe Furlong; Midle Field, Leick Fg., Coppspill, Hockliffe Way, Leick Brook, Leick Brooke Fg., and Beggers Bush”.
