Beggars Bush: A Perambulation through the Disciplines of History, Geography, Archaeology, Literature, Philology, Natural History, Botany, Biography & Beggary

Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire Beggars Bush 1794

The Will of Zachariah Shrapnel, Esq. made in 1794 includes a bequest of  “all those scattered or dispersed Lands commonly called Beggars Bush , Little Field and Tyning, Prentite [?] Land, Baily’s Barn, figure [?] Winter Leaze and Raynard in Bradford and in adjoining Parishes and now in occupation of Thomas Harding, James Biggs and Farmer Crook [?] and some of those in my own occupation”.

The Shrapnels were an established family in various businesses. Zachariah Shrapnel also owned property in Nowhere Lane but this does not seem to be near Beggars Bush. I have been unable to trace any other record of the name. The Tithe Survey of 1841 does not record any Beggars Bush (or any Prent~, Bail~ or Raynard). There was a Bush`s Alley (now St. Margaret`s Place) but it seems very likely this was named after one of the many members of the Bush family in Bradford.
